WHY HYPNOSIS FOR FITNESS?
I was first taught the power of the mind when I was on the high school swim team. Our coach would have us do mental rehearsals and practice our races from start to finish. In addition he had a strong philosophy of what he called PMA or Positive Mental Attitude. He instilled in us the belief that we could beat a team that had been winning our division for 26 years, as I remember it. It took some time for us to get on board, but he was relentless in his efforts that with our physical and mental work ethic, we would prevail.
Because of this positive grooming experience, I got very good at both the physical aspect of sports as well as the mental aspect. I used this mindset to create success in my life as a professional fitness competitor. At 5’9″ I took up gymnastics in my early 20’s when I was told I was too tall to do backhand-springs. I was not too tall. PMA, mental conditioning, visualizations, drive, focus, vision, I took everything I learned from swimming and added to it in order to create success in my life as a professional fitness and figure champion. Fitness is a sport I enjoyed competitively for 20 years. I retired at the age of 41.
It is through the years of training myself, as well as coaching other athletes that I began to incorporate hypnosis and other forms of mental training. It started with my own competitive process that I began refining my mental game through the use of mental techniques from the field of Sport Psychology, hypnotherapy and NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming). I began to read every book I could from top athletes to find out more about their mental game and what techniques they used to excel.
I created self-hypnosis, visualization and mental training sessions for myself. I discovered that my clients also enjoyed these sessions so I would offer pre-recordings to them as needed for stress reduction, emotion regulation, releasing anxiety, stage might and more. Soon my clients started to ask me to work with them on mental skills and I would devote some of our weekly sessions to nutrition and contest prep and some to working on mental training.
I retired from competition in 2009 when my body was no longer willing to do the intense training required to be a top level athlete. It was at that point when I went back to school to refine my skills to be even better at helping others achieve their goals. I received my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UC Davis in 2014 and I am currently in my final year of my master’s in counseling psychology with a concentration in somatic and sport psychology. I also continue to stay relevant in the NLP and hypnosis communities by attending continuing education to keep my tool box fresh with the latest resources for my clients.
Excellence is my passion. I will do whatever I can personally to achieve this goal, and at the same time, I strive to help my clients reach their true potential I strive to be the best version of myself every day. With that in mind when you put your dream in my hands, I take it just as serious as I would as if it were my own. Because I place such value on excellence, I will do the best that I can to help you feel empowered, passionate and ready for your upcoming competition or event.
I work best with people who have a vision, mission and understanding of what they want, and are just a little bit in their own way. What is it that is getting the way of what you want? That is our starting point. That is where we add resources and work on your mental game. I am solution focused and I will use whatever tool I have in my bag of tricks to help get you results as you define them.
My highest values as a coach are authenticity, wellness, uplifting communication, balance and interpersonal and intra-personal excellence. I truly believe we are all here on this planet to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be.
